New York City is the second best city for small businesses in the United States, according to the 2019 Best Cities for Small Businesses report by Small Biz Trends. The annual report highlights cities with favorable conditions for small businesses, defined here as companies with less than 50 employees.
The rankings use the latest US Census data, emphasizing the ratio of small businesses to the general population in metropolitan areas. The rankings also consider business industry clusters, infrastructure, costs of doing business, workforce availability, and the nature of the city’s entrepreneurial community.
New York City was ranked highly because of its strong entrepreneurial culture, favorable business climate, and thriving entrepreneurial community. More than 411,000 small businesses operate in the area, making up 2.03 percent of the population.
Miami, Florida, topped the list because of its welcoming business environment, growing population, and good infrastructure that allows companies to serve wider markets.
